Research

Gene technology has been applied to the cultivation of black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon for genetic improvement and disease control. Three research areas have been initiated. The first topic involves the establishment of a well-characterize shrimp EST resource and construction of high quality gene index database for gene finding, gene characterization and EST data mining.

The second topic involves the identification and characterization of bio-defense molecules or immune effectors from the black tiger shrimp. Knowledge in shrimp immunity is of great importance in establishing strategies for disease control. However, little attention has been paid in shrimp immunity. In this study, we aim to identify molecules involved in defense mechanisms in P. monodon by cloning and characterization of their encoding genes and proteins. The expression of the defense genes during the response to infections will be analyzed which will lead to better understanding of their involvement in defense mechanism.

The third topic involves the development of molecular markers e.g. microsatellite , AFLP and SNP markers. Powerful genetic markers are use to evaluate the degree of genetic diversity in natural populations for management of wild stock and to initiate selection for long term management of potential stocks. Genetic markers also have numerous applications in shrimp breeding programmes including identification of natural stocks, family-specific markers and mapping loci for important traits.
